What features does the iPhone 14 have?

The iPhone 14 is a fairly basic update, as far as new iPhone models are concerned. It's still powered by the same A15 processor we saw on the iPhone 13. If anything, the biggest change is that there's no longer an iPhone 14 mini, with Apple launching a 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Plus to go alongside the standard model instead.
While the iPhone 14 camera upgrades aren't quite as exciting as what we've seen on the iPhone 14 Pro, the standard model features a faster ultra-wide camera and an improved selfie camera with autofocus for the first time.
Apple has also integrated safety features such as Crash Detection, and Emergency SOS using satellites. Crash Detection uses a gyroscope and other sensors to track if you've been part of a car accident, automatically sending a push notification to your phone to allow you to call for help in one tap.
While the US models are eSIM only, Australia's devices still have a physical SIM slot.
The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus are available in six colours: midnight, starlight, Product Red, blue, purple, and as of March 2023: yellow.
Does the iPhone 14 have a different design?
The iPhone 14 is almost identical to the iPhone 13 in terms of appearance. It still features a 6.1-inch screen with a 60Hz refresh rate. It is however joined by a 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Plus, replacing the iPhone mini family.
The iPhone 14 is marginally lighter, but realistically the difference between the 13 and the 14 design-wise is minimal.
Does the iPhone 14 have a good camera?
The iPhone 14 has two cameras on the back: a 12MP primary lens and an upgraded 12MP ultra-wide lens. The selfie
camera has also been improved, and now features autofocus.
Once again the focus has been on improving lowlight photography, with Apple claiming that the new 12 MP main camera performs 49% better than its predecessor in darker conditions.
This is, in part thanks to the new 12MP primary lens with larger sensors, pixels and a faster aperture. In true Apple custom, there have also been computational photography upgrades that are applied to every lens in the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus. Apple introduced a new software pipeline dubbed Photonic Engine, which improves low-light performance on all cameras.
Video has also taken a step up, with improved stabilisation using Action Mode. Supporting HDR Dolby Vision, this more advanced stabilisation on video makes for smoother moving shots, further mimicking a gimbal without the need for one.
How long is the iPhone 14 battery life?
The iPhone 14 has a slightly larger battery than the iPhone 13. Apple says that it is the best iPhone battery yet, estimating up to 20 hours of video playback, and 80 hours of audio playback.
In our testing, we found the iPhone 14 to perform similarly to the iPhone 13 in terms of longevity. You can expect between five and six hours of screen time per charge.
How fast is the iPhone 14 processor?
The iPhone 14 features an A15 processor just like the iPhone 13. In our testing, we found it to be a reliably fast device.
Does the iPhone 14 have 5G?
The iPhone 14 naturally has 5G connectivity.
WhistleOut's coverage checker tool has 5G coverage maps, making it easy to see whether you can get 5G. All you need to do is pop in your address when searching for a new phone plan. After you've done so and hit Search, you can jump straight to the coverage map by tapping See Coverage Map and then tapping Click To Activate Interactive Map.
This map will show you what kind of coverage you have in your area. 5G coverage is highlighted using the darkest shade of purple, but unticking 4G and 3G can help make it clearer. The drop-down menu lets you choose between telcos.
Coverage maps are only approximate, only show outdoor coverage, and may be impacted by local conditions such as buildings.

iPhone 14 plan providers
Telstra, Optus, and Vodafone all offer iPhone 14 plans. Here's a breakdown of the major benefits you can expect each provider to offer.
Telstra iPhone 14 plans
Telstra iPhone 14 plans are often the priciest on the Australian market, but they do come with a host of perks.
Telstra lets you pay your iPhone 14 off over 12 or 24 months, and all plans are free from excess data charges. If you go over your cap, your data will simply be slowed to speeds of 1.5Mbps, which is still fast enough to stream video in SD. But speeds may be slower during peak times.
Optus iPhone 14 plans
Optus iPhone 14 plans come with solid data inclusions.
Higher-end Optus Samsung plans also come with unlimited international calls to selected destinations included with the plan.
All Optus plans are contract-free, and devices can be paid off across 12, 24, or 36 months.
In addition, all Optus postpaid plans are free from excess data charges. If you go over your allowance, you'll be slowed to 1.5Mbps rather than being billed $10 per gigabyte.
Vodafone iPhone 14 plans
Vodafone iPhone 14 plans may not come with the kinds of freebies and perks you can get from Optus or Telstra, but they have perks when it comes to bundling.
If you have a Vodafone mobile plan, you can get most of the telco's internet plans - NBN, 5G home internet, and 4G home internet - at a discounted rate.
Vodafone customers also save 5% on their total mobile bill for each postpaid mobile plan on their account after the first. This discount maxes out at 20% and doesn't include handset repayments.
Vodafone postpaid plans are all free from excess data charges. When you go over your plan allowance, you'll be capped at 2Mbps and 10Mbps, depending on how much you're spending per month. The higher your bill, the higher your capped data speeds.
You'll also get access to Vodafone's famous $5 roaming, which is still easily the best way to travel with your Australian phone number.
How do you choose the best iPhone 14 plan for you?
Since customers only have the Big Three telcos - Telstra, Optus and Vodafone - to choose from, there are a few main
considerations to keep in mind when picking an iPhone plan:
- Answering "how much mobile data do I use" can help you avoid overspending. Don't pay for more data than you need
- Decide whether you want to pay off your phone shorter on a 12- or 24-month plan or get a smaller bill over a longer period of time on a 36-month plan
- If you're a frequent overseas traveller consider any international roaming inclusions
- You may also want to make international phone calls so check if the destinations you may be calling are included in your plan

Where can I buy an iPhone 14 for less?
The iPhone 14 is rarely on sale but you can find it for $50-$100 cheaper than at Apple if you shop around from retailers like Big W or Bing Lee. Or even a website like eBay. However, we also think it's worth considering a refurbished iPhone 14 from a trusted reseller.
