Choosing the best mobile provider isn't easy. In addition to the Big Three - Telstra, Optus, and Vodafone - there are a whole host of smaller providers offering great value plans.
While it might seem overwhelming, we're here to help you get on top of this decision. Every year we judge the WhistleOut Awards, an initiative designed to find the best mobile providers and plans on a national level. When judging the best mobile providers in the WhistleOut Awards, consider factors like pricing over 12 months, data allowance, and extra perks like bundling discounts, international calling, and roaming options.
Below, we'll look at key winners from our most recent awards - revealed in August - and touch on some other providers popular with WhistleOut readers for some alternate picks. But to start, here's a short list of SIM-only plans with at least 20GB from our winners:
The best prepaid mobile provider, Value: TPG
Some people might know TPG best for its cheap internet plans, but it's also a great option if you're in the market for a prepaid plan. It's won our large prepaid plan award three years in a row now, and this time it's also taken out the value category.
TPG mobile plans are often available for 50% off for your first six months. In addition, existing TPG internet customers still receive a $5 to $10 per month discount on most TPG mobile plans after the initial promo period is over. TPG mobile plans are powered by the Vodafone network.
Here are TPG's current mobile plans:
The best prepaid mobile provider, Large: TPG
On top of winning the value category for prepaid plans, TPG also won the large category in this year's WhistleOut Awards. This marks the third time in a row TPG has won this award.
Here are TPG's current mobile plans:
The best SIM-only mobile provider, Value: Moose Mobile
Queensland-based Moose Mobile has won the value category of our best SIM-only plan provider awards four years in a row now. The affordable provider runs on the Optus network and prides itself on low costs and great local customer service. This is something Moose Mobile has delivered in spades over the last few years.
Most Moose Mobile plans have 5G connectivity, but speeds are capped to 100Mbps on all but its most expensive option. All plans but Moose's entry-level option include 200GB of data banking. International talk and text are also limited to Moose's top plan.
Here are Moose's current mobile plans:
The best SIM-only mobile provider, Large: iiNet
iiNet and Circles.Life have been trading places for the large category of the best SIM-only mobile provider award over recent years and it was another tight contest this time around. iiNet won out this time around thanks to the sheer value of its Medium plan. iiNet should be on your list if you're after a lot decent amount of data and bang for your buck.
iiNet's plans are a mostly no-frills affair, but customers do get a discounted plan for the first six months after signing up. iiNet mobile plans are powered by the Vodafone network.
Here are iiNet's current mobile plans:
The best mobile provider for iPhone plans: Vodafone
Vodafone has won our best mobile provider for iPhone plans award four years in a row. Vodafone set the bar for competitive pricing and inclusions of iPhone contracts over the last few years and is the place to go for anyone looking to buy an iPhone on a plan.
All Vodafone mobile plans include at least 100 minutes of international calls, and have $5 per day roaming when travelling overseas. Vodafone customers with multiple mobile plans on the same account can save on their total bill. Customers get a 5% discount for each postpaid plan after the first, up to a maximum of 20% with five plans. Just note that this discount only applies to the base mobile plan fee, not the hardware repayment fee.
Vodafone mobile customers can also get a discount on Vodafone NBN plans and 5G home internet plans.

The best mobile provider for Samsung plans: Vodafone
It's perhaps no surprise Vodafone has mirrored its iPhone award performance in the Samsung category as well, also winning the best mobile provider for Samsung plans award four years in a row. If you want to buy a new Samsung phone on a contract plan, then Vodafone should be your first port of call.
As mentioned above, Vodafone mobile plans all come with $5 per day international roaming, at least $100 of international calling credit, and bundling discounts.

The best mobile provider for kids: TPG
On top of its prepaid awards, TPG also took home our gong for best mobile provider for kids thanks to its affordable options. When buying a mobile plan for your kids, you'll want a low-cost prepaid option, and TPG comfortably meets these needs.
TPG mobile plans are powered by the Vodafone network.

The best sustainable mobile provider: felix

Most popular mobile plans
If the above picks aren't what you're looking for, here's a look at the most popular mobile plans with WhistleOut users right now. Popularity is based on the number of WhistleOut users who have interacted with a plan over the last seven days. We've sorted these by price.
How to choose a mobile provider
When you're looking for a new mobile provider, there are a few key factors to consider. These include the following:
If you want a new phone
Do you want a new phone, or are you happy with a SIM-only mobile plan? If you're looking to buy a phone on a plan, you're largely limited to Telstra, Optus, and Vodafone.
However, if you're happy with your current phone or plan on buying a new one outright, you can pick from a much wider range of providers. Smaller providers are powered by the same networks as The Big Three, but often have cheaper plans and better value deals.
Postpaid or prepaid
If you're opting for a SIM-only mobile plan, you'll need to decide whether you want a postpaid plan or prepaid plan. These days, there's very little difference other than when you pay your bill.
On postpaid mobile plans, you'll get a bill at the end of each month and have two weeks to pay it.
On prepaid mobile plans, you'll pay upfront ahead of your month.
Prepaid plans tend to be harder to rack up excess charges on, which can make them better for kids. Just note that some prepaid plans need to be recharged every 28 days, which means you'll be charged 13 times per year.
The amount of data included
You'll want to work out how much data you're currently using each month as a starting point for finding a new phone plan. While there's a host of supersized plans available with over 100GB per month now, there's no point in paying for that if you're only using 10GB.
Roaming inclusions
If you travel overseas regularly, you may want a plan that includes international roaming. This is especially important if you want to use your local number when outside of Australia.
Coverage
Mobile coverage is always an important consideration: after all, you want to make sure you can actually use your mobile plan where you live, work, and commute. Any provider should be fine in metro areas, but you'll likely want to go with a provider on the Telstra network if you're more remote.
How we pick the best mobile providers
We pick the best mobile providers through the annual WhistleOut Awards. We have reviewed the biggest cross-section of providers possible, including the top 10 service providers in each category and many smaller providers. The top ten service providers typically cover 80% or more of Australia’s phone and internet plans.
The WhistleOut Award categories for phone and internet plans are judged by awarding three, two and one points to the providers of the three best plans in each category on a monthly basis, (July 2023 - June 2024).
When judging plans, we consider 12-month costs, features and perks, data inclusions, and support channels. In terms of support, we consider the breadth of support options available to customers, coupled with feedback from customer review aggregators. Due to the scope of telcos we track, we have not personally tested support services for each provider.
The award winners are the providers with the highest number of points at the end of the 12 months. In case of a tie, winners are chosen based on the number of 1st positions, then 2nd positions, then 3rd positions they achieved in that category over the year. A provider can receive points for multiple plans in a category if their plans best match the award criteria.
The Sustainable Provider awards are entered by written submission and assessed by WhistleOut's in-house panel.
The 2024 WhistleOut Awards, which were given to the mobile providers in this guide, were announced in August.
