Apple has added representations of indigenous lands in Australia to its Maps app, highlighting indigenous place names, reserves, and protected areas. As part of the changes, searching for the traditional name of a town or city will bring up that result. Entering Meanjin will bring up Brisbane, for example.
In Australia, Apple has worked with data from the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS), which it combined with information from local language holders, language centres, Aboriginal Land Trusts, and ranger groups.
Some specific areas will have place cards displaying information about that area from an indigenous perspective.
Mamadawerre community member Rodriguez Pindiying says that the update to Maps is more than just about geography; it's about preserving culture.
"Through Apple, we have the rare privilege of sharing our heritage on a global stage, reminding the world that no matter how distant we may seem, our connection to the land, to each other, and to the world is universal," said Pindiying in a press release.
The changes to Apple Maps are now live globally, and will also appear in other places where Apple Maps data is used, such as the iPhone Weather app.
