
Australia is lagging behind on 5G download speeds, ranked 41st compared to the rest of the world according to leading insights company Opensignal.
Opensignal recently unveiled the new Global Network Excellence Index which ranks mobile markets worldwide with regard to infrastructure readiness, user experience and capacity to support future digital needs.
Australia ranked 17th globally and came 8th for 4G/5G Network Availability and 26th for the metrics of Excellent Consistent Quality and 4G Download Speed.

As a value, Australia's 5G Download speed came in at 185.5Mbps, with South Korea leading by over 140% at 446.3 Mbps.
The other countries in the top five for 5G Download Speed came in at were Qatar (367Mbps), Brazil (350.8Mbps), New Zealand (301.7Mbps) and Guatemala (299.7Mbps).
To build the index, Opensignal concentrated on three areas network availability (the proportion of time mobile users spend connected to 4G/5G networks), sufficiency (a percentage of mobile users whose experience is above more demanding thresholds) and future readiness (measured by the average download speeds for mobile users on 4G/5G networks).

Locally, Opensignal tracks the performance of Telstra, Optus and Vodafone's mobile networks in its Mobile Experience Report.
In the most recent report Optus led the pack on 5G download speeds with speeds of 209.1Mbps nationally while Telstra has the largest 5G footprint covering 91% of Australians.
