Apple is no longer selling its cheapest iPad

Coinciding with the announcement of a new iPad Pro and a new iPad Air, Apple has quietly discontinued the ninth-generation "classic" iPad. The ninth-generation iPad was the cheapest tablet in Apple's family, and the last iPad to feature a home button, Lightning connector port, and 3.5mm headphone jack.

This effectively makes the tenth-generation iPad the new entry-level option. This is helped by a price cut, which sees its starting price come down to $599. That's still $50 more than what the ninth-generation iPad retailed for, however.

The tenth-generation iPad is a lot more "modern" than the ninth, featuring a cleaner design, a UBS-C port, and faster internals. When our sister site Reviews.org/au reviewed it, it described it as "an entry-level iPad that finally adopts the modern trappings of the iPad Air and iPad Pro for a more consistent tablet family". The main criticism was price, which has definitely been addressed by the current price cut.

While Apple is no longer selling the ninth-generation iPad, it's likely to still be available at retailers for a little bit longer. And we're sure to see it kicking around the refurbished iPad market for quite some time.
