I spent about 60 minutes with Apple's Vision Pro yesterday, and I haven't stopped thinking about it since. It was a lot to take in, but the standout experience was watching some spatial video I shot at a gig the other month using my iPhone 15 Pro Max.
Whenever I see live music, I normally shoot just a little bit of footage. 30 seconds here or there, so that I've got something to remember the show by. When I go back to my clips, they always bring back a spark of the joy I felt in the moment.
The Vision Pro amplified that spark into a bolt.
When I opened my spatial clip of Sky Ferreira playing "Heavy Metal Heart" on Apple's headset, it was almost like being back at the show. The video quality wasn't amazing - it was a very dark gig - but it didn't matter. It's perhaps the strongest emotional reaction I've had from a gadget in years. It's cool when tech can make you feel something, especially given how iterative product cycles have become.
Of course, rewatching memories - whether they're from a concert or otherwise - isn't exactly the most practical use for a $5,999 face computer. That’s more than many of us would even consider spending on a laptop. And at this time, only the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max are actually able to film spatial video. …Unless you want to shoot while wearing a Vision Pro, which doesn't seem like the best idea in the middle of a mosh pit. Either way, it's quite a pricey investment on a technology still in its infancy.
I've not spent anywhere enough time with the Vision Pro to have concrete opinions yet. The tech is insanely cool, and features like eye tracking and gesture controls worked better than I could have imagined. Of course, there are some rougher edges too. While the passthrough quality is better than any other headset I've tested, there was a bit of blur when moving my head quickly, like the video couldn't quite keep up. And there are also societal and social issues that stem from wearing the headset itself.
Like I said, it was a lot to take in.
While I don't have a clear answer for who the Vision Pro is for, I think everyone should try it. Book in for a demo at an Apple Store, because above all, it's a stunning technical achievement. And if you're anything like me, it's one that might make you feel something.
